Taking a hike or walk in the woods through fall foliage can be a pleasant family outing but it can also invite some unwanted guests. Ticks can latch onto exposed skin, move from your clothing onto your skin, and even tag a ride on your dog. Ticks are also transmitters of illnesses like as Lyme disease. While these pests can be worrisome, don’t let them prevent you and your family from enjoying the outdoors!Make sure you are taking the necessary precautions before heading outside. This is especially important if you are living in an area with a significant tick population and the presence of tick-borne diseases. Learn how to prevent ticks and reclaim your outdoor exploration with these tick prevention tips.
How to Prevent Tick Bites:
Use Tick Repellent:
Using an insect repellent is a great preventative step that can be used against both ticks and mosquitoes. You want to apply a trusted topical repellent on clothing and exposed skin in order to prevent mosquito bites and keep ticks off your body. Make sure the repellent that you’re using is effective on ticks, as many repellents are only mosquito specific.
If you do experience a bite, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with enough water to form a paste. Apply to the bite and then wash off the mixture after 10 minutes.
Keep your skin covered by wearing pants and long-sleeve shirts. This will provide less area for a tick to latch onto, and decreases your chances of bringing a tick home. Also opting for light-colored clothing over dark colors, like navy and black, allows you to easily spot any tick that may be on your clothes before heading inside.
Having your pants tucked into your socks will create a seamless length of protection through to your feet. This will prevent exposed ankles and from having ticks climb up open pant legs.
Down the Middle:
When you’re on a hiking trail it is wise to walk down the middle of the hiking trail rather than along the edges. This will help lower your exposure to tall grasses where ticks are often lurking and waiting for the perfect host to walk by. Obviously you might have to get close to the edges if another party is walking past you on the trail. However, it is wise to stay in the middle for as long as possible and whenever possible.
Once you have completed your outdoor excursion you will want to check yourself, your family, and your pets for any ticks. For humans, you want to start from the head down: checking hair, ears, underarms, waist, thighs, and inner knee. For your furry friends, you want to start at the snout, check the ears, around the collar, under their legs, and under their tail.
